Overview
By 2014 everyone will be required to have electronic health records. The work required to reach this goal is expected to create a high demand in several types of health IT professionals to support this project. Our community college partners (see list below) provide an intensive non-degree education program designed to provide a pool of qualified workers with both medical and IT knowledge to ensure the electronic health record project will provide the quality and efficiency benefits needed, while maintaining privacy and security of medical information. Training is provided in six different areas.
The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) has defined these six job roles for the health information technology (HIT) workforce. This page provides the ONC’s basic description for each of those six job roles. More information about each role can be found by clicking on the link in each description. Graduates of these programs can find a list of job openings at the HIMSS ONC HIT Workforce Development Program job board.
